One started from: じゃ ない → dja naille → dja naille pas (for that French touch) → with dja n'est pas as an undecided option from the じゃ ね~~~ crowd. Whence:

Believe it or not, I fleetingly thought about this a day or two ago! Now I'm a pushover for the fleur-de-lis, as you know, so I briefly thought of the Quebec flag with the rising sun at the intersection of the white lines (brought down to a tastefully proportional size, not a huge red blob). Perhaps an embarrassment of riches (and I know you have opinions on vexillological design ); perhaps it'd look like a clown's nose in the middle of the flag. To dial it back a notch, maybe a compromise flag like what New Zealand's contemplating. For example, the upper diagonal field (halvsies) in blue with one white lis, the bottom white (or the same blue) with the rising sun, and some softening stripe up the middle, akin to this?



(stripe not as wide as all that; blue bottom field would allow for a white-red-white stripe, and in my mind's eye, that looks better, though symbolically, may not thrill the Japanese contingent)

The "red" of the flag I just posted as well as the two you came up with are showing up as a mauve-ish, cabbage-rose pink (the images at present don't show up on my cell). I'd go with the arrest-me-red of the Japanese rising sun and the Canadian national flag. Free-forming, not married to anything. Flags? Numbers? (been janko'ed). Sheesh, it's Day Four. I thought it would be more about how to say, "Did you have quiche for lunch? You've got some spinach on your teeth."

Well, I don't dislike it, but with the dot in the lower right like that it seems to me to be a bit too... "nautical flag" meets semaphore for my taste. But, the two flags we are trying to combine aren't the easiest of designs to meld. Hmmmm, I just got an idea.

Edit: I'm back!

This design uses the fleur as a stand-in for the sun, putting the blue of the French/Quebec flag on the bottom to symbolize the "sun" rising over the ocean. I call it the "Rising Fleur-de-sea." A pun!
